European bison (Wisent)

The pre-historic European bison is alive and well in Avesta, where it was saved from extinction in the 1920’s by Axel Ax:son Johnsson who created Avesta Wisent Park. In this well-run facility, approximately 30 European bison graze in a large enclosure on the edge of Avesta, and several calves are born each year. The wisent was once the symbol of Avesta Steel Works (now Outokumpu) and stands as a statue in stainless steel in the centre of Avesta.
