The Municipality

Political organisation

Avesta municipality is run by elected politicians, the municipal council being the final forum for decisions. The council has 41 members, chosen in local elections at four-year intervals. The election in 2010 resulted in the following distribution of seats:

Social Democratic Labour Party (S) 18 seats
Centre Party (C) 3 seats
Conservative Party (M) 9 seats
Left Party (V) 2 seats
Christian Democratic Party (KD) 1 seat
Green Party (MP) 2 seats
Liberal Party (fp) 2 seats
Axel Ingemar’s List (AIL) 2 seats
Swedish Democrats (SD) 2 seat

Administration

Avesta municipality has four administrative departments with a total of 10 independent units, each financially responsible for a separate area. Each department is answerable to an elected board or committee, and act on the basis of decisions taken in the relevant committee.

Care department (providing appropriate economic and social support to citizens, and providing for the needs of the elderly and disabled.)

Educational department (providing quality education at all stages of life and responsible for schools, child care, culture and tourism, as well as providing for recreational activities).
